ACTAS youngsters enjoy an Institute adventure
It may well be a bye week for the Capitals but at least one ACT junior will still be hitting the WNBL hardwood in Adelaide and Perth this weekend.
Local juniors Kathryn Rendell and Alex Bunton have both been on scholarship at the ACT Academy of Sport (ACTAS) for the past year and are currently enjoying three-month scholarships with the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS).
It’s been a wonderful adventure for both youngsters and a window into the demands and possibilities of our truly international sport.
As part of their AIS opportunity both girls have played in some of the Institute’s WNBL fixtures against some of the best senior women in the country and this weekend Kathryn (just 15) will make the road trip as part of the AIS squad for the longest road trip in the league.
For Alex (16), her recent school camp and some minor injury concerns have kept her off the roster this weekend but there is still a possibility for both of earning a full-time opportunity at the AIS sometime in the future.
Significantly Alex will now get the chance to train with her ACT Under 18 squad this weekend as part of their preparations for April’s Australian Under 18 Championships in a demonstration of the connectivity of Australia’s elite basketball programs.
On the local front, the new ACTAS squad for 2010 has commenced their program and the accompanying National Intensive Training Program (NITP) has a physical testing session at Belconnen on Saturday morning.
The NITP will have approximately twelve full-time athletes mostly from the Under 16 age group and offer various opportunities to invited athletes who demonstrate significant progress and potential during the 2010 ACT Representative season. This smaller number represents a desire to focus resources on improving the quality of each of the ACT Representative age programs, whilst still providing extra opportunities and pathways for those athletes with elite potential.
ACT Academy of Sport Scholarship athletes 2010: Kathryn Rendell (Wests), Alex Bunton (Vikings), Luke Duffey (Daramalan), Hayley Douglas (Vikings), Hamish Ahern (St Edmunds), Dylan Simpson (Canberra Grammar), Darcy Malone (Wests), Claire King (WCW Dodgers), Jake Jobling (TSC) and Declan Pratt (Radford)
